1. Bacterial infections1. Streptococcus pyogenes

Streptococcus pyogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium that appears as spherical cocci arranged in chains. It belongs to Group A Streptococcus and shows beta hemolysis on blood agar. It is commonly found in the throat and skin of humans and can be part of the normal flora in some individuals. This organism is an important human pathogen and causes diseases such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, impetigo, and cellulitis. It can also lead to severe infections like necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock-like syndrome. In addition, it is associated with non-suppurative complications such as rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis due to immune reactions. The bacterium possesses important virulence factors like the M protein and a hyaluronic acid capsule, which help it evade the immune system. It is usually treated effectively with penicillin, and early treatment is important to prevent complications.
