Quadrant - III (Assignments)

1. Classification of Cementum

1. Define cementum. Classify cementum and describe its types in detail. Key points to include: Definition: Cementum is a specialized mineralized tissue that covers the root of the tooth and helps anchor the periodontal ligament (PDL) fibers. Functions: Tooth support, repair, compensation for attrition, and maintaining occlusal height. Classification of Cementum (based on cellularity and fiber content): Acellular Afibrillar Cementum (AAC): Found at the cervical enamel surface Contains no cells or collagen fibers Formed by cementoblasts without inserting fibers Acellular Extrinsic Fiber Cementum (AEFC): Located in the cervical and middle third of the root No cells but contains Sharpey's fibers from PDL Main function: Tooth anchorage Cellular Intrinsic Fiber Cementum (CIFC): Found mainly in resorption lacunae and apical areas Contains cementocytes and intrinsic collagen fibers Formed by cementoblasts during repair Cellular Mixed Stratified Cementum (CMSC): Found in apical third and furcation areas Contains both extrinsic and intrinsic fibers and cementocytes Formed during continuous eruption or adaptation Intermediate Cementum: Located between granular dentin and cementum Contains enamel-like proteins Formed by Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath Clinical significance: Role in periodontal therapy, regeneration, and orthodontics 2. Classify cementum and differentiate between cellular and acellular cementum. Key points to include: Classification as above Compare on basis of location, cellularity, function, thickness, and presence of fibers Table format for easy comparison Relevance in clinical procedures like scaling, root planing, regeneration
